"The smallest feline is a masterpiece"
Leonardo da Vinci

Throughout history, man has been intrigued and fascinated with cats. Not so surprising then that cats are surrounded by myths, the stuff of urban folklore, legends, and worshipped as gods possessing mystical and magical powers, and also as demonic. Cats are used in witch's spells, secret rites, considered lucky charms, keepers of spirits, and protectors of the living and the dead. Cats are represented as Zodiac signs, appear on six cards of the Tarot deck, and have guarded temples in many Asian countries for centuries. And, French legend even says cats are the only creatures who know the path back to the Garden of Eden.
While white cats are symbols of light and good, black cats represent darkness and evil to many peoples. Cats are also perceived as tricksters - with the silence of padded feet and thieves in the dark of night, cats are the scourge of vermin.
And, while shrouded in mystery, cats have long been an inspiration to artists and writers and have their place in drawings, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, poetry, prose, and literature. A Celtic belief is that the cat's eyes are the windows to the soul for humankind to explore, and so it is, with the eyes, we look into the mystery of cats.

"When the tea
is brought at five
o'clock, and all the
neat curtains are
drawn with care,
The little black cat
with bright yellow
eyes is suddenly
purring there.
The white saucer
like some full moon
descends at last
from the clouds
of the table above."
Harold Monro
1879 - 1932
